One of the most fundamental parts of any Skilled Migrant Category assessment is identifying the correct ANZSCO occupation and skill level.
This is not simply a matter of choosing a job title.
The role must be assessed against the relevant ANZSCO occupation description, including the tasks performed, the level at which those tasks are carried out, and whether there is a substantial match overall.
Once the ANZSCO classification is established, the practitioner and client can properly assess:
- which SMC pathway may be available;
- the applicable wage threshold or multiplier;
- whether the occupation appears on the Red, Amber, or Trades and Technician lists; and
- how skilled work experience may be counted
A wrong classification at the beginning can affect every assessment that follows.

Classify first. Assess the pathway second.
